The Admiralty Shipyards and the Krylov Institute have been involved in the design, production and modernization of civil and military ships for more than a century and they continue to be amongst the leading companies in the Russian shipbuilding industry today supplying both the domestic and foreign markets.
Challenge
One of most important areas of the shipbuilding industry is the provision of the post-sale services. Due to the sensitivity of the military shipbuilding market in particular, suppliers are often not allowed to perform the maintenance and repair procedures, so they need to provide the customers with the most comprehensive support documentation possible. However, existing documentation, which consists of text and 2D drawings, is often difficult to understand and any inaccuracy in translation may cause additional problems. To avoid this situation, shipbuilding companies are now looking to produce user-friendly documentation that can be effectively adapted to local markets.
Solution
The Admiralty Shipyards and the Krylov Institute have chosen to use Cortona3D RapidManual to create interactive visual documentation for technical staff. This allows the companies to illustrate the maintenance and repair manuals with interactive 3D simulations that provide a more realistic representation of the procedures and do not require translation. 3D simulations also help to prevent mistakes during localization of the textual part of the documentation and can also improve the end-user understanding of the procedures. As a result, the risk of operational mistakes is significantly reduced. Both companies are now expanding their use of Cortona3D and are using it in their Virtual Ship project. Besides the creation of the 3D-powered maintenance and repair documentation, the Virtual Ship project includes the development of 3D simulations that facilitate the study of ship systems and compartment arrangements.
